on these superliners can prove to be much more than just a
job and the work can actually be great fun. There
are lots of fellow crew members onboard, modern amenities,
extra services and creature comforts, and usually the
cabins are bigger and better equipped.
Cruise ship employment is on the rise meaning there are
plenty of jobs within the cruise industry. There are
ample opportunities to travel to different parts of
the globe while working; which is of course a major reason
behind the attraction of the cruise ship jobs.
Cruise ship employment offers some of the best travel and
work benefits yet, all because of an industry that is
booming in popularity. And while passengers from all over the
globe are enjoying the pristine waters onboard these high-end
vessels, employees from all over the world are enjoying the
same, but getting paid to do it!
Jobs on cruise ships are becoming more available due to lots
of new ships being put into service. More than 12.6
million people sailed on cruise ships in 2008.
Specific Cruise Ship Jobs
Cruise Ship Employment is available in many different forms,
including everything from a waitress to a nurse to a nail
technician.
Due to the fact that the cruise ship industry is contantly
expanding, there are currently many jobs in design,
advertising, web, new media, film, tv, radio, and
architecture. Job functions are generally narrow
however.
Bars are often the social centers of a cruise ship and offer
another attractive place to work with good earning
potential. The bar department generally employs
quite a large number of people and can be a great place to
start.
Top end staff are the captain and the various managers
of activities, food and beverages and other services who have
had years of experience in the field.
Employees are provided with employee only facilities.
Many ships will have a well equipped gym onboard for you to
keep in shape! Employees usually work aboard one ship for
the full tenure of their contract and may end up visiting the
same ports numerous times. This allows ample opportunity
to become familiar with the countries and peoples visited.
The Other Crew
Chances are the other crew members will be from many
different nationalities. You should be capable of
understanding their differences and appreciating it. As
always, your people skills will be vital.
Crew members, working in passenger areas of the vessel are
expected to follow the dress code. Crew members can
generally, after a period of service, transfer to other ships
in the company's fleet, cruising in different regions and
visiting other exotic ports!
Entertainers
Most entertainers will work through entertainment agencies,
which are companies providing personnel to cruise
lines.
If you are an entertainer, agents will charge a percentage
of your monthly salary (between 10 and 15 %), either deducted
from your pay check and sent to them by the cruise lines or in
some cases the cruise lines pay the concessions and the
concessions pay the personnel they have hired, (of
course keeping their percentage).
Entertainers usually gain employment by application and
audition. Age ranges considerably, although 21 to mid
30's is standard, companies who concentrate on serving the more
mature market often prefer music and artists who can cater to a
more selective, older clientele.

Overall, you would be well advised to pursue and well
rewarded in so many ways by pursuing cruise ship
employment.
