Cruise Lines"If
you are planning on going on safari, do not get desperate going
on a cruise. The thing to carry, are an extra pair of dancing
shoes…"
But here, it is not a case of going on a jungle safari, to
see the big baboon beat on the bongo, but more of taking a long
leisurely cruise in the Mediterranean. This popular song of the
60s is quite evocative about the holiday mood one should be in,
before he decides to go on holiday. And what could be better
than going in for a cruise vacation, with you relaxing on a
stylish cruise ship.
Cruise liners began to become more popular in the mid-19th
century, when cruise ships , diversified into carrying
passengers from one place to another along with goods. That was
when people began to find out that it was not only the
prerogative of rich European aristocrats to get yachts made
specifically to their own requirements for that they could
cross from Southampton or Dover to skip to Paris, whenever the
mood took them.
This came in with the use of steamships, which made it very
easy for a person to cross the Atlantic in about 2 weeks, when
it took a number of months previously in ships, which relied on
sails to help them cross the ocean. A cruise ship is either
going to be a part of a cruise line or is just going to be a
single-ship moving on a fixed itinerary from one place to
another. Cruise lines are companies which operate such cruise
ships. The cruise ship is going to be managed by a crew, headed
by the captain who is going to make all the administrative
decisions for the smooth running of the ship. Apart from this,
there is going to be an entertainment staff, which is going to
take care of all the fun and games part of making your cruise
and extremely enjoyable and memorable experience.
Traditional shipping lines, which ferried passengers from one
place to another gave rise to cruise lines, then businessmen
began to look at the amazing potential of cruise ships being
used for tourism purposes. One could board ship, on one corner
of the earth, and then spend the rest of his vacations, going
around the different ports the cruise ship was going to halt
at.
It was in the 1960s, that cruise ships began to be built
specially just for cruising purposes, so that the demand for
holiday makers to get to know more about exotic and wonderful
places, which they could only dream about before, could be
realized.

One has to remember that a well maintained cruise line has to
keep up with the latest trends, with holidaymakers. One year,
everybody may be going to Monte Carlo, while another year, if
you are not "doing" Ibiza, you come in the dinosaur category!
That is the reason why cruise lines, continuously upgrade their
ships and renovate them. There is also a frequent change in the
itinerary, in keeping with the popularity of a tourist
location. One has to do that, because these ships are extremely
expensive to run.
The operating costs need to be taken out from bookings done by
tourists and that is the reason why, this competition is
extremely cutthroat. But there are a number of companies, which
are still going strong like Star Cruise, Holland America,
Carnival cruise, Royal Caribbean, etc.
